Grabbed this directly from Melbourne IT’s website:

What is an A record?

An A Record connects a host name to an IP address. When computers connect to each other they connect using IP addresses ie: 203.27.227.23. An A Record allows easily remembered internet addresses. A Record’s are very customizable in that you can create numerous A Records to direct to multiple IP addresses.

If melbourneit.com.au is the domain name, a few common examples of A Records are:

  • melbourneit.com.au
  • www.melbourneit.com.au
  • mail.melbourneit.com.au
  • shop.melbourneit.com.au

How to set an A record for Melbourne IT

Note: The following steps assume that you have accessed your MyAccount and your DNS Management product is active

  1. Select the domain name
  2. Go to the DNS section on the Domain Management section
  3. Select Manage DNS
  4. Go to the A, CNAME, AAAA Records section
  5. Enter in the Hostname, eg. example.com.
  6. Enter in the Points To address, eg. 123.123.123.123
  7. Select the Type of record, eg A
  8. Select the Add button
  9. Wait until the Status changes from Publishing to Published

Note: If you want to your changes to be visible as soon as possible you will need to modify the TTL record. This tells name servers around the world how long to cache DNS records for in seconds.

Note: When entering the hostname without the domain appended on the end, ensure NOT to use the (.) following the hostname as this is not a valid DNS configuration
