Google Analytics: A Quick Look

by on Aug.07, 2011, under SEO

You’ve set up your site with some SEO best practices, now its time to sit back and see how we fare.. How can we track this most effectively?

Google Analytics lets us track traffic patterns on your website for free. Since it’s Google, it can be integrated easily with other great related Google tools such as AdWords and AdSense. All you need to get started is a google account (preferably with a gmail account since you need this for receiving emailed reports) and away you go. Simply add the website you want to track to your analytics account and copy/paste the code that is provided into a file which is called on every page of your site which you want to track. Typically this will be a file such as your ‘header.php’ file or ‘footer.php’ file or ‘default.aspx’ etc. which commonly are called on every page in your website.

Putting it into the Footer is not a bad idea as it means that it will hinder load times even less, however putting it between the <head> </head> tags should not really affect things too much from my experience.

You can also get various plugins which take care of this for you, where all you should need to do is enter your “UA” Code into a field. An example for WordPress since I’m using it can be found here: http://yoast.com/wordpress/google-analytics/
