Quick Selection Sets in Maya

by on Nov.19, 2009, under Animating

When animating in Maya or needing to select a bunch of things over and over, a great way to enable yourself to do so by the click of a button is to use a Quick Selection Set.

I’ll use an example which can then be applied to whatever you need it to.

Lets say you have a character that you’re animating which is fully finished with good controllers, but there are a whole heap of them and you want to be able to add keys to them all quickly as you change the characters poses. This is how you could set up a Quick Selection Set and add it to your shelf to enable you to simply click the button on you Shelf and then hit “s” or whatever to key all of the controls in one go.

1. Select all the controllers for your rig (using shift-select to select multiple controls).

2. Go to Create > Sets > Quick Select Set. A dialogue box will pop up.

3. Give it a meaningful name and check the “Add to Shelf” checkbox.

4. Now each time you create a pose for your character, you can click on the button in the shelf to select all controllers and press the “S” key to set a key for them all.
