Google no longer requires keywords or meta tags but other search engines still use them so they're useful to have. Google scans the content that is on all pages of your site instead. If you have your relevant words in images and such google won't be able to read these and it will be detrimental to your rating. It's therefore worthwhile to use text for these where possible.

The job of collecting information about web pages is performed by automation using an agent called a 'crawler, spider or robot (bot) which is different depending on the search engine. They look at every URL on the internet and collect keywords, links, relevant data and phrases on each page. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
I've recently started reading a book by Mike Monahan called "Search Engine Optimization Secrets: SEO for 2011" in the hopes of understanding SEO better. I have yet to decide whether or not I will try and practice this on one of my sites.. I've no doubt they are horribly bad having never really looked into SEO before for any of them.
